British envoy Neil Wigan to leave Kenya for senior role in London
British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan OBE, will be leaving Nairobi at the end of August to take up a prestigious new role as Director General Strategy and Delivery at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London, according to a release by the British High Commission Nairobi on Monday, August 11, 2025.
After two years of dedicated service in Kenya, Wigan announced his departure, reflecting with pride on the strong and expanding partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom. During his tenure, the bilateral relationship has grown significantly across multiple sectors, delivering substantial benefits to both countries.
“I am deeply saddened to be leaving Kenya after a whirlwind two years,” Wigan said. “The Kenya-UK partnership has flourished in trade, investment, technology, innovation, and cultural ties–bringing benefits to both nations and their peoples.”

Historic milestones and partnerships
Since arriving in 2023, Wigan has overseen a period marked by historic milestones. These include the landmark visit of King Charles III to Kenya, which reinforced diplomatic ties and goodwill. In addition, the two countries signed the new Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership, a framework aimed at strengthening cooperation in areas such as security, economic growth, and sustainable development.
Under his watch, the UK has supported the training of Kenyan marines, enhancing Kenya’s security capabilities. There have also been significant infrastructure investments, notably the Nairobi Railway City project, which promises to improve connectivity and boost economic activity in the region.
Beyond formal engagements, Wigan spoke warmly about the people of Kenya and the country’s immense potential. He recounted meaningful experiences, such as attending a Maasai elders’ meeting and witnessing firsthand the positive impact of UK-funded projects supporting women-led businesses in Wajir County. His visits spanned diverse parts of the country, from the tea plantations of Bomet County to the innovative hubs within Kenya’s Silicon Savannah.
“Kenya and the UK are advancing together, and it has been a privilege to be part of this journey,” he reflected. “Asanteni sana na kwaherini.”
His new role as Director General Strategy and Delivery at the FCDO will see him shaping UK foreign policy on a broader scale, continuing his commitment to global partnership and development.
