Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has pressured the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to order the release of Kenyan activists abducted and detained in Uganda.

While speaking during the burial of the late politician Dalmas Otieno in Migori on Thursday, October 2, 2025, the MP, after taking the podium, disrupted the service as the youths stormed the stage as they chanted his name.

He then moved to tell the Prime CS, who was the top government official at the funeral, to order the release of Kenyan activists detained in neighbouring Uganda.

He told Musalia that immediately after the burial, he should call Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni to secure the release of the abducted Kenyan activists.

Babu also called for the release of Kenyans arrested while carrying out their fishing activities around Migingo Island, urging the Foreign Affairs CS to intervene.

Tuko na Prime Cabinet Secretary hapa, kuna Wakenya ambao wameshikwa huko Uganda. Tukimaliza hii ibada, tunaambia mheshimiwa Mudavadi apigie Museveni simu watoe hao Wakenya ambao wameshikwa, na wale Wakenya ambao wanashikwa Migingo watolewe pia,” Babu Owino stated.

Abduction

These come after two Kenyan activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, were abducted in Kampala by armed operatives on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The incident occurred at the Kireka petrol station in Kampala. Presidential hopeful Bobi Wine took responsibility for the incident, stating that they were abducted over their association with him and for showing solidarity with his political movement.

According to Bobi Wine, the pair was bundled into a vehicle “mafia-style” and driven to an undisclosed location, with their whereabouts still unknown.

“We strongly condemn the abduction by armed operatives of Kenyan activists and human rights defenders Bob Nyagi and Nicholas Ayoo. The two were picked up mafia-style this afternoon from a petrol station in Kireka and driven off to an unknown destination!” Bobi Wine stated.

Relationship with Uganda

Meanwhile, his is not the first time Babu Owino has been called out on Uganda’s government over the handling of dissenting voices. He has gotten in the bad books with the country, even at some point being barred from ever visiting the country. This was due to his association with Bobi Wine, something that never sat well with Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni called him out during his visit to Kenya while unveiling former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to contest for the African Union chairmanship.
