AU condemns killing of Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi

The African Union has raised alarm over the killing of Libyan political figure Saïf al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Muammar Gaddafi, warning that the incident could further destabilise Libya’s fragile political transition.

The statement was issued by the African Union Commission on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, on X, following reports that the killing occurred a day earlier in Zintan City, Libya.

In its reaction, the continental body said the incident comes at a sensitive time for Libya, which has struggled for years to restore stability and build inclusive political institutions after prolonged conflict. The AU noted that violence of this nature risks deepening divisions and derailing efforts aimed at national reconciliation.

Addressing the reported killing, the African Union Commission chairperson expressed concern over the incident and its implications for the country’s future.

“Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has learned with deep concern of reports regarding the killing of the Libyan political figure, Saïf al-Islam Gaddafi, on 3 February 2026 in Zintan City,” the statement reads.

The AU further stressed that such acts threaten ongoing political processes and undermine trust among Libyan stakeholders.

“The Chairperson strongly condemns this violent act, which risks further undermining efforts toward a credible and inclusive political transition in Libya,” the statement

The Commission also acknowledged the human cost of the incident, extending sympathy to those directly affected.

“The Chairperson expresses his condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to all those affected by this incident, and recalls the imperative of resolving political differences through peaceful and lawful means,” the statement reads.

Calling for accountability, the AU urged Libyan authorities to act decisively and transparently.

“Mahmoud Ali Youssouf calls upon the Libyan authorities to uphold the rule of law and to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this killing are thoroughly investigated, and that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement reads.

The AU concluded by appealing for calm among political actors while reaffirming its long-term engagement in Libya.

“The Chairperson further urges restraint and calm among all Libyan political actors and reiterates the African Union’s continued commitment to supporting the Libyan people and institutions in their efforts to achieve a durable, consensual, and peaceful resolution to the political and security crisis that has affected the country since 2011,” the statement reads.
