Kibra Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Orero has called for a more accountable and transparent approach in the implementation of Kenya’s affordable housing project.

He noted this, urging the Principal Secretary (PS) in the Housing Ministry to take full responsibility for ensuring the equitable distribution of housing units.

Speaking during an interview on K24 TV on June 13, 2025, Orero stressed the need for a systematic allocation model that guarantees the right people benefit from the government’s ambitious housing plan under the ‘new dawn’ agenda.

“The responsibility lies squarely with the PS. We must get it right,” Orero said, noting that Kenya’s goal to deliver 250,000 affordable housing units annually will only succeed if anchored on fairness and integrity.

The affordable housing program, spearheaded by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, is one of President William Ruto’s key legacy projects. It is designed not just to ease the country’s housing deficit but also to spur job creation and economic growth.

Orero’s remarks come amid rising scrutiny over how beneficiaries of the low-cost homes are selected. Past housing initiatives have faced criticism over claims of favouritism, lack of transparency, and poor oversight issues; the MP insists must not be repeated.

“The system must work. Platforms like Boma Yangu are good, but they need to be supported by sound administration. Otherwise, we risk eroding public trust,” he added.

Boma Yangu, a government-run portal, serves as the entry point for Kenyans seeking to apply for affordable homes. However, concerns remain over data handling, accessibility, and follow-through, especially for low-income earners in informal settlements.

Orero’s sentiments echo a growing demand for stronger governance in state-led development projects, where planning alone is not enough without strict implementation and monitoring mechanisms.

He argued that as the housing program gains momentum across counties, the role of the PS will remain central not only in delivering completed units but also in safeguarding the process from political interference and misallocation.

For thousands of hopeful Kenyans, the promise of a decent, affordable home now rests on the government’s ability to match construction milestones with credible and inclusive distribution models.
