Siaya Governor James Orengo has stated that his security withdrawal will not silence his criticism of the government, vowing to continue with his role as the key opposition figure.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Orengo said he would continue what he termed as the struggle to salvage the country from the “KaOngo regime.”

“Stripping away my security will not stop the work to salvage this country from the KaOngo regime. I will continue to stand with Kenyans as the de facto leader of the ODM Party, because the people demand it,” Orengo said.

Orengo’s security withdrawal

The remarks by Orengo come days after he protested the withdrawal of his security detail, terming the move an attempt to silence dissent.

In a letter addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Orengo complained about what he described as the abrupt and unprocedural withdrawal of his personal security officers and the security personnel attached to his Nairobi residence.

According to Orengo, the officers were withdrawn on the evening of Tuesday, May 19, 2026, without prior notice, formal communication, or any replacement being provided.

“I am writing to register my strong protest regarding the abrupt and unprocedural withdrawal of my personal security detail and the security personnel deployed at my Nairobi residence, which occurred yesterday evening, Tuesday, May 19, 2026,” Orengo stated.

Orengo’s demands

Orengo further demanded an official explanation from the Ministry of Interior and the Inspector General of Police regarding the grounds upon which the withdrawal was authorised. He also called for the immediate reinstatement or replacement of his official security personnel at all designated stations, including his Nairobi residence.

The outspoken governor described the move as highly irregular and deeply concerning, saying the withdrawal was sudden and unprovoked. He maintained that the security changes were carried out without official communication or suitable replacements.

The Siaya governor reiterated that the provision of security to state officers is anchored in the Constitution and Kenyan law, adding that it should not be treated as a political favour or luxury.

Despite the developments, Orengo, who has been a heavy critic of the current regime, stated that he would continue carrying out his duties with patriotism and enthusiasm.
