Opposition mobilises Ukambani residents for enhanced voter registration exercise

Leaders allied to the United Alternative Government have intensified calls for residents of the Ukambani region to turn out in large numbers and register as voters during the ongoing enhanced continuous voter registration exercise announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The leaders emphasised that mass voter registration is a critical step in shaping the country’s political future, urging eligible citizens not to be left out of the democratic process.

Speaking in Makueni County on Monday, March 30, 2026, during a visit by the United Alternative Government, the leaders, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper Democratic Movement party leader and former vice president, and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, said the region remains a key political bloc.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, urged parents and youth, especially in Ukambani, to register as voters and support Kalonzo Musyoka.

Speaking in Makueni, he criticised local leaders for undermining Kalonzo and called on residents to vote them out in favour of Wiper candidates, saying those disloyal to the party should not be elected.

“Sasa niulize, si huyu Kalonzo ni kiongozi wenu? Sasa yeye akisema mchukue kura, iko maneno ingine? Amesema hajasema? Mkifanya hivyo tumekubaliana, wazazi wahakikishe watoto wamechukua kura, vijana wachukue kura. Nyinyi Wakamba ndio mtaokoa Kenya kwa sababu your vote is the most trusted vote in the Republic of Kenya,” Rigathi said.

The leaders argued that registering in large numbers is the only way citizens can effectively express their will at the ballot and push for leadership change.

They claimed that failure to register would amount to surrendering the region’s political voice at a crucial time in the country’s governance trajectory.

At the same time, the leaders criticised the current administration under William Ruto, terming it punitive and out of touch with the needs of ordinary Kenyans.

They asserted that a strong voter turnout in 2027 would be instrumental in unseating the government and ushering in what they described as a more inclusive and people-centred leadership.

They further called on youth, women, and first-time voters to take advantage of the IEBC registration window, highlighting that demographic groups with the highest numbers have the greatest potential to influence electoral outcomes.

The leaders maintained that the power to transform governance lies squarely in the hands of the electorate, starting with voter registration.

The IEBC has since launched a nationwide exercise for enhanced continuous voter registration and is targeting 2.5 million new registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
