The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has resolved to formally initiate its withdrawal from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, signaling a significant shift in Kenya’s opposition politics.

In resolutions issued following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on February 11, 2026, the party cited sustained breaches of the coalition’s Deed of Agreement by certain partners as the reason for the move.

“The NEC reviewed recent developments within the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition. It noted with concern that certain erstwhile coalition partners have acted in violation of the Deed of Agreement that established the Coalition,” the resolutions read.

“In light of these sustained breaches and in order to safeguard the integrity, autonomy, and strategic direction of ODM, the NEC resolved to initiate the formal process of withdrawal from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition in accordance with the applicable legal and constitutional provisions.”

Pre-election strategy

The NEC also adopted in full the resolutions of the Central Committee made on January 12, 2026.

The party formally mandated its leader to spearhead pre-election coalition negotiations with other political parties and formations, guided by ODM’s ideological foundations, strategic interests, and membership aspirations.

On internal reforms, the committee received a progress report on the party’s 10-Point Agenda and the implementation of the NADCO Report. While appreciating the overseeing committee’s work, the NEC urged stakeholders to address obstacles that are slowing progress.

The committee further mandated Leader of Minority Junet Mohammed to advocate for the mandatory allocation of Ksh. 450 billion to counties in the supplementary budget.

The party also reiterated its commitment to justice, calling on the government to allocate funds in the forthcoming Supplementary Budget to compensate victims of human rights violations, with disbursements channeled through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Party convention

In matters of party discipline, the NEC removed Secretary General Sen. Edwin Sifuna from office with immediate effect, citing conduct issues.

Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo will serve in an acting capacity until a substantive officeholder is elected.

The committee further resolved to convene a National Delegates Convention (NDC) in Nairobi on March 27, 2026. The convention will deliberate on the party’s strategic direction, ratify key decisions, and prepare for the forthcoming General Election.

Closing the resolutions, the NEC reaffirmed ODM’s dedication to democratic governance, constitutionalism, social justice, and the pursuit of a broad-based, inclusive government that reflects the will of the Kenyan people.
