Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu has dismissed the efforts of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to consolidate the Mount Kenya region votes ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking in Mbeere South on Saturday, October 11, 2025, the DCP leader claimed that President William Ruto is intent on dividing Mt Kenya voters as a strategy to maintain his grip on power.

He later added that Ruto is using the likes of Ann Waiguru to scatter the region.

Gachagua said the Mt Kenya people cannot allow themselves to be separated by the Head of State when he is uniting his people in the Rift Valley, further attacking Ruto’s recent move to woo KANU chairman, Gideon Moi, to his side.

“Ruto is hatching a plan against us. He has called his people from the Tugen, Marakwet, and Kipsigis to unite,” he stated.

“But here at our home. He is sending Kindiki and other leaders to sow divisions among us,” he said.

“He knows that for him to remain in power, he has to divide the voters of Mt Kenya, but we are not fools; we have decided to put our votes in one basket. Let us not accept being divided by him and his people,” he implored.

Ngunjiri faults Gachagua

However, Wambugu has weighed in on the recent incident that saw demonstrations erupt in Kirinyaga County after the youth accused Gachagua of attacking the County Governor Ann Waiguru for derailing his efforts to unite the region and speak one language politically.

”Gachagua goes to Kirinyaga to insult Waiguru. She mobilises her supporters to defend herself. He goes back & attacks her again.

Recently, the former Nyeri Town MP faulted Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) for accusing older parties of creating disunity in the Mt Kenya region. In a statement shared on his social media pages on Saturday, September 27, 2025, he argued that the new party, which was formed just six months ago, cannot accuse others of dividing votes while it is equally contributing to the same problem.

“This new party keeps accusing other, much older parties of wanting to divide Mt Kenya votes. They don’t see themselves as the ones dividing our votes since they came up just 6 months ago? And where do they think the ‘united’ votes were before they came?” Wambugu stated.

Meanwhile, as the country heads into the next general election, the Mt Kenya region remains a key area in shaping the national political landscape.
