Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has dismissed claims of growing divisions within the opposition, insisting that leaders remain united in purpose.

Speaking to residents on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Matiang’i said that building and organising a strong team takes time and patience.

“Unajua kuweka watu pamoja na kupanga watu pamoja inachukua muda. Ata ukianza kujenga nyumba ama boma pale nyumbani; kuelewana na watu tuseme sasa mlango utakuwa hapa, dirisha itakuwa hapa, tutapanga namna hii, kitanda itakuja kuwa hapa. Mwanzo mwanzo inakuwanga namna hiyo. Tunapangana,” he said.

Matiang’i assured supporters that he has been in regular contact with fellow opposition figures, saying they are all committed to working together for the sake of Kenyans.

“Na sasa tukipangana namna hii tutakuwa pamoja kwa sababu tunajua wananchi wa Kenya. Vile mmesema nyinyi wenyewe na vile viongozi wamesema wanataka tafadhali sisi wote tuwe pamoja. Na ninawaakikishia, sababu nimeongea na wengi wenzangu katika upinzani. Tunazumgumza kila wakati tutakuwa pamoja. Sababu wananchi wanataka tutembee safari hii tukiwa pamoja,” he said.

Gachagua warns of infiltration

His remarks come amid growing talk of cracks within the opposition, which, later, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday night stated that President William Ruto was using state agencies to divide rival parties.

Gachagua claimed that individuals have been assigned to mislead key opposition leaders such as Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

“I hear they have promoted somebody to try to manage Kalonzo, another to manage Matiang’i, and another to manage Governor Natembeya so that they can convince us separately that we can make it on our own,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua accused Ruto and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of infiltrating opposition parties to weaken them ahead of the 2027 general election.

“They are being used by William Ruto to cause problems within the opposition. When I was in office, he planted many people on me. And when I came out of office, I chased them away,” Gachagua said during an interview.

He cautioned opposition leaders against welcoming defectors working for Ruto, saying such moves could undermine unity.

Meanwhile, in Kisumu, former Chief Justice David Maraga said he is ready to work with any leader who respects the Constitution. His statement was seen as a message to both government and opposition figures calling for constitutional order.

Matiang’i has in recent weeks intensified his political activities. On Friday, October 3, he met Jubilee Party youth leaders in Nakuru as part of a campaign to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and prepare for its presidential nominations.

The former CS said he plans to hold meetings in all 47 counties to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 polls, stressing that the opposition must remain united if it hopes to challenge Ruto effectively.
