Laikipia Senator John Kinyua has asked the Senate to investigate the deteriorating condition of the Nyahururu–Rumuruti (A4) road, warning that the key highway has become dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

Kinyua raised the matter through a formal request under Standing Order 53(1), seeking a statement from the Senate Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing. The senator said the road, which serves Laikipia County and the wider Mt Kenya region, has deteriorated significantly despite repeated maintenance works.

According to Kinyua, the current state of the road poses serious safety risks to road users and has contributed to several accidents.

He noted that efforts by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to maintain the road have not resolved the problems affecting the busy route.

“Despite repeated maintenance interventions by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the road remains plagued by extensive potholes, narrowing carriageways, poor markings, blind curves and unsafe surface undulations,” Kinyua stated.

The senator added that these defects have contributed to frequent accidents along the road. He cited a tragic incident that occurred in December 2025.

“These defects have contributed to frequent accidents and tragic loss of lives, including a fatal incident on 21st December 2025 in which Stephen Rubuya King’au and his son, Dennis King’au Rubuya, residents of Ol Jabet in Marmanet, perished,” he said.

Senate orders road probe

Following the request, the Senate Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing is expected to investigate the issue and provide a detailed report.

The committee will examine the current condition of the Nyahururu–Rumuruti (A4) Road, including the extent of the damage, safety hazards and how the deterioration affects motorists, pedestrians and the surrounding communities.

Lawmakers also want the committee to review the recent maintenance works carried out on the road. This includes assessing the scope, execution and supervision of the repairs.

Particular attention will be given to the performance-based contract awarded by KeNHA for the road works. Senators want to know whether the contractor met the required standards in terms of quality, timelines and proper oversight.

In addition, the committee must outline both immediate and long-term measures to restore the road to safe standards. This includes plans to repair damaged sections and prevent the road from deteriorating further.
