Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi remains in hospital following a brutal attack by armed assailants at a Kisumu café on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The attack, which occurred while the senator was visiting the area, has sparked outrage across Kenya’s political class and intensified calls for accountability from government officials.

Speaking on Thursday, April 9, 2026, former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the attack and demanded immediate action from security agencies.

“Having seen the clip and having listened to the Senator, there is absolutely no reason why those individuals who attacked Osotsi would not have been apprehended by now,” Kalonzo said.

He warned that if arrests were not made by Friday, they would pursue private prosecution.

“We will be on a trail. We will be going out to produce private prosecution again. The Minister for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen. This is the Office of the President. This is William Ruto’s office. And therefore, we hold them to account if he doesn’t order the arrest of these goons now,” Kalonzo said.

The former VP emphasised the severity of the matter, pointing out that it concerns the lives of Kenyans.

“We saw him firing people over a small scam. This is a bigger issue because it has to do with the safety of citizens. Raymond Omollo should immediately resign, and Kipchumba Murkomen should advise President Ruto quickly.”

Kalonzo also highlighted the political dimension of the attack.

“We wanted to resolve this country so that we can strengthen democracy in Western and other regions. Kenyans from the West will not accept this type of leadership. Why attack Osotsi? The man said you threw me out of a kangaroo NDC, ODM,” he said.

Kalonzo demands urgent action

Kalonzo asked Senators Daniel Maanzo and Boni Khalwale to consider a special sitting in both the Senate and the National Assembly.

“I don’t know whether you’re going to call for a special sitting to discuss this as a matter of urgent national importance. Today it is Osotsi; tomorrow it could be someone else,” he said.

Kalonzo warned that private prosecutions would be pursued if no action was taken.

“We are giving the authorities until tomorrow. We have seen others resign over smaller issues,” he added.

The attack on Senator Osotsi follows his ouster as ODM Deputy Party Leader during the Linda Mwananchi faction’s National Delegates Convention. The senator had been active in rallies advocating for President William Ruto’s exit in the 2027 polls.

CCTV footage of the Kisumu attack shows Osotsi being pinned to the floor, repeatedly slapped and kicked by assailants. Waiters and bystanders eventually intervened, protecting him from further harm.

Political leaders have expressed their concern. Siaya Governor James Orengo said the attack was part of a coordinated effort to intimidate the Linda Mwananchi faction.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed also condemned the attack, calling for speedy arrests.
