Jubilee Party and the Party of National Unity have formally announced a cooperation agreement aimed at consolidating opposition strength ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The announcement followed a joint session of the parties’ National Executive Committees (NECs) held on February 18, where leaders from both sides issued a communiqué outlining a strategic political alliance.

The partnership is being spearheaded by Jubilee leader Fred Matiang’i and PNU leader Peter Munya at the Jubilee Party Headquarters.

The two parties said the cooperation seeks to unify political support in the Mt. Kenya region while also building broader national opposition coordination against the current administration.

Framework for joint political activities

Under the agreement, Jubilee and PNU committed to coordinated political activities, including joint grassroots mobiliSation, sharing of campaign resources, and collaborative political engagements across several regions.

The cooperation stops short of a full merger, with both parties retaining their individual identities and leadership structures. However, the communiqué outlines a shared approach to political strategy, including working toward the endorsement of a single presidential candidate in the 2027 election.

The parties indicated that the arrangement builds on previous engagements between their leaders, including joint political events and regional consultations that have taken place over recent months.

He said the opposition coalition considers Fred Matiang’i as the current leading figure, but emphasized that the process of identifying a single presidential candidate under the United Alliance should remain open, transparent, and guided by agreed structures.

He noted that coalition partners are working together toward a joint candidate and will establish a committee to oversee the selection process and ensure fairness among participating parties.

“kiongozi wetu sote ni Matiang’i lakini progress ikifika iseme sio yeye, ioseme ni mwengine na ikuwe na uwazi, kwa hivyo tuko kwa hii pamoja ya kutasfuta mgombea mmoja wa United Alliance, tunachagua kamati ya kusimamia hii pia.”

Focus on national agenda and unity

According to the communiqué, the alliance will focus on key national issues, including economic recovery, governance reforms, youth employment, and anti-corruption measures. The parties also signaled an intention to expand the cooperation framework to include other like-minded political formations under a broader opposition platform.

The agreement emphasizes strengthening political coordination structures at both national and grassroots levels, with implementation details expected to be released in subsequent phases.

Evolving opposition realignments

The cooperation comes amid ongoing political realignments as parties position themselves ahead of the next general election cycle. Jubilee and PNU leaders indicated that the partnership aims to enhance organizational capacity and voter outreach in multiple regions.

Political observers are expected to monitor how the cooperation evolves, particularly regarding candidate coordination mechanisms and the potential entry of additional parties into the arrangement.

Further announcements on joint programs, campaign structures, and timelines are anticipated as the two parties begin rolling out the cooperation framework across the country.
