National Assembly Majority Leader and Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichung’wah has stated that Kenya needs national leaders, not tribal ones.

Ichung’wah made the statement during a development drive at Kugisingisi SDA grounds in Kuria West on Saturday, June 15, 2024, and the comments come at a time when he is seen to be opposing the camp allied to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua has been at the forefront of championing the one-man, one-vote, one-shilling economic call that he believes will favour the Mount Kenya region. This has divided the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), as some members, including the Kikuyu MP, oppose the drive by the DP.

“Nationalism is viewing the entire nation as one while appreciating our diversities and rejecting tribal lenses. The entire country deserves equal development and a share of the national cake.

“It is myopic to project tribal insecurities and use ethnic lines to segregate and fragment regions. Kenya needs national leaders, not tribal lords,” Ichung’wah said in a statement posted on his X handle.

Ichung’wah fires at DP

On Friday, June 14, 2024, at the Gichuru Memorial High School and fundraising event in Gikambura, Kikuyu Constituency, the vocal MP made statements that were understood to be an attack on Gachagua.

“Stop telling people at night that William Ruto is a one-term president, and you will martial your community to undermine and sabotage the government of President William Ruto so that he fails and that you become the president.

“If you want to become the president of Kenya, work in the position you have been given today to deliver to the people of Kenya, and when your time comes, they will see leadership in you. But if you seek to sabotage the government of Kenya for your own selfish ends, my brother, you will go absolutely nowhere,” Ichung’wah said.
