‘Hata ule Rigathi ambaye tuliimpeach, if we require him tunamrudisha’ – Didmus Barasa speaks on UDA working with former DP in 2027

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa on Sunday, February 2, 2025, hinted at the possibility of the ruling coalition working with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 polls.
Speaking at AIC Kapsang, in Ziwa Ward, Uasin Gishu County after a church service, Didmus Barasa explained that during elections, some political leaders are compelled to work with individuals they need and not necessarily those they like.
The vocal lawmaker added during the 2027 campaign period, the ruling coalition could reconsider working with Gachagua. He told the congregants that Gachagua was only impeached because he was viewed as unsuitable to host the DP’s position.

He, however, argued that the party could still consider his membership and even grant him a position.
Didmus expressed hope that by May 2027, Gachagua would have undergone proper rehabilitation and picked a few lessons which would help him be re-admitted to the party.
He made the sentiments while responding to the reports that a new coalition was in the offing to take on President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential poll.

“Whatever our competitors are assembling we will only require one or two meetings to dismantle all that they are planning. Because during all elections, at times is not about the people you like, it is about the people you need.
“Ile wakati ikifika, hata ule Rigathi ambaye tuliimpeach, if we require him tunamrudisha (when that time comes, even Rigathi whom we impeached, if we require him, we will bring him back) because he was only unsuitable to serve our country as Deputy President but he can be suitable to be a voter, a member of our coalition because he has gone some rehabilitation and he is learning something and I am sure even the people and the church is praying for him,” Didmus Barasa stated.
“We are hoping by May 2027, he will have reformed. We will revive his membership in UDA and find him another job when that time comes,” he added.
Nonetheless, Didmus maintained that the ruling coalition with form their team at the right time.
Gachagua on Ruto
Didmus’s remarks came days after Rigathi Gachagua vowed to work with all Kenyans to challenge President Ruto’s administration and make any chance of his re-election in the 2027 general election unlikely.

The former DP, who has relentlessly criticised Ruto’s administration since he was booted out through an impeachment, made the pledge after joining opposition politicians Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa during the unveiling of the latter’s new DAP Party headquarters in Nairobi.
“We are part of this team and will walk this journey together to liberate this country. We will make whatever sacrifices necessary to make sure William Ruto is a one-term president,” Gachagua stated.
