United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar has revealed that he was among the emissaries sent to reach out to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with the aim of persuading him to work with President William Ruto’s administration.

Speaking during a UDA function on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Omar disclosed that the move was part of a broader strategy by President Ruto to unite the country and end the long-standing political divisions that have characterised Kenya’s leadership for decades.

According to Omar, the engagement with Raila was not meant to weaken the opposition but to foster national cohesion and ensure that all leaders, regardless of their political affiliation, contribute to the country’s progress.

He noted that Raila’s willingness to cooperate with the government was driven by a desire to see a united nation rather than one defined by rivalry and regional competition.

The UDA Secretary General praised President Ruto for departing from what he described as the colonial “divide and rule” system, replacing it with a “unite and rule” approach that seeks to include all Kenyans in the country’s governance.

He further defended the president’s push for unity, saying that it demonstrates inclusivity and maturity in leadership.

Omar also addressed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s statements while still in office that formed the basis of his impeachment then, on regional interests, noting that the president’s vision of unity supersedes ethnic and regional politics.

William ruto anataka kuenda kando na ile sera ya wakoloni ya device and rule; ameleta sera ya unite and rule kuunganisha Wakenya. Gachagua amekuja na shares; hata magenz wa mt kenya wanajuwa kiongozi si wamunyoro,” he added.
