Safaricom unveils significant update on Home Fibre service
Safaricom has unveiled one of the most significant updates to its Home Fibre service in years.
The telecommunications giant has standardised the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limit across all its fibre packages to a massive 15 terabytes (TB) per month, while substantially boosting post-FUP speeds for all plans.
This change promises to transform the experience for both casual users and heavy internet households, including streamers, gamers, and multi-device families.
Unified 15TB FUP
Previously, Safaricom customers faced drastically lower monthly data caps. The entry-level Bronze plan allowed only 500GB before speeds were throttled, while Silver, Gold, and Diamond plans were limited to 1TB. Post-FUP throttling often left users frustrated, with speeds dropping to as low as 1Mbps in the Bronze tier.
Under the new policy:
| Package | Speed | Price (30 Days) | New FUP limit | Post-FUP speed |
| Bronze | 15Mbps | Ksh2,999 | 15TB | 2Mbps |
| Silver | 30Mbps | Ksh4,100 | 15TB | 4Mbps |
| Gold | 80Mbps | Ksh6,299 | 15TB | 8Mbps |
| Diamond | 500Mbps | Ksh12,499 | 15TB | 50Mbps |
| Platinum | 1000 Mbps | Ksh20,000 | 15TB | 100Mbps |
This represents a 30-fold increase for Bronze and a 15-fold increase for Silver, Gold, and Diamond plans, effectively bringing the idea of “unlimited internet” closer to reality for nearly all users.
Notably, post-FUP throttled speeds are up to 33 times faster than before, meaning that even after reaching the 15TB threshold, users can maintain a usable and high-quality connection. Diamond users, for instance, now enjoy 50Mbps after FUP, compared to a mere 3Mbps previously.
Who benefits most?
The enhancements benefit a wide spectrum of users:
Heavy households: Families with multiple devices will no longer worry about hitting restrictive data caps mid-month.
Streamers and gamers: With faster post-FUP speeds, uninterrupted streaming and online gaming are now a reality.
Business-from-home users: Entrepreneurs and remote workers can enjoy high-speed connectivity without worrying about throttled speeds affecting productivity.
Safaricom’s Platinum package, priced at Ksh 20,000 for 1Gbps, is now complemented by a 100Mbps post-FUP speed, an industry-leading move that positions it well against competitors like Zuku, Faiba, and even satellite options such as Starlink.

Beyond FUP
Safaricom’s Family Share service allows users to share voice minutes, data, and SMS with loved ones, while the 4G and 5G Home plans offer alternatives in areas without fibre coverage. All services adhere to the updated FUP rules to ensure equitable network access for all users.
This upgrade signals Safaricom’s proactive strategy to maintain market leadership amid increasing competition. By addressing long-standing complaints over low post-FUP speeds and restrictive data limits, Safaricom is not just retaining its customer base – it’s actively reshaping the Kenyan home internet landscape.
