Barasa presided over the official opening of the event on Monday, November 25, 2024.

“Today, I had the honour of presiding over the official opening of the 11th edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games at Mumias Sports Complex, Mumias West Constituency. This year’s theme, ‘Building Synergies on Climate Change through Sports and Cultural Activities,’ underscores the critical role sports and culture play in addressing global challenges,” Barasa stated.

The Governor said Kakamega County beat Mombasa and Nyeri counties to win the hosting rights.

Among the disciplines lined up in the festival are football, handball, basketball, netball, squash, badminton, tug of war, scrabble, netball, chess, volleyball, pool, ajua, golf, table tennis, and darts. There will also be a choir competition and cultural dance.

“This edition brings together staff from Kakamega and the other 46 counties to compete in 22 disciplines, including football, netball, indoor games, tug of war, and cultural performances. Kakamega has proudly fielded 354 participants who will compete in 20 disciplines,” Governor Barasa said in a statement shared on Monday, November 25.

Nairobi County is fighting to defend its title but will face stiff competition from hosts Kakamega, Kisumu, and Uasin Gishu. Kisumu and Uasin Gishu finished second and third respectively in the last event.

During last year’s championship in Meru County, Nairobi bagged gold in darts, table tennis, set pieces, squash, darts, men’s volleyball, badminton, men’s handball, women’s netball, and basketball.
