Kitui Central Member of Parliament (MP) Makali Mulu has come out to defend Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the impeachment hearing at the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
Mulu, who was among the few MPs who sided with the embattled Deputy President, accused his colleagues of double standards in pushing for the impeachment of Gachagua over the shareholding claim.
The Kitui Central MP, who rattled lawmakers in his presentation, argued that most MPs push for a similar narrative only that they do not say it publicly.
Mulu therefore maintained that it would be dishonest to eject DP Gachagua from office on those grounds.
“The second issue is the issue of shareholding. Honourable members, let’s be honest with ourselves; we are all politicians, we have been voted in, and we represent constituencies. How many of you can say that you are not practicing what is being explained in this motion? Let’s be very honest with ourselves,” Mulu stated while opposing the impeachment motion.
However, his remarks were not well received by a section of MPs who booed him and raised points of order interfering with his presentation.
“You know, Honourable Speaker, I can see a very deliberate move to curtail me from saying what I want to say. Honourable Speaker, you need to protect me; you have been protecting everybody who has spoken. Unless also you are on the same side as those who are supporting. I don’t think it’s fair,” Mulu said after being jeered.
“In the past, this House has been thrown under the bus because of this kind of mentality. Where we go, make decisions, and out there when they go to court… a number of our Acts of Parliament have been declared unconstitutional basically because, as members, we come here and we start shouting and assuming that other people out there are not watching,” he added.
MP Mbui opposes
Kathiani MP Robert Mbui also opposed the impeachment motion during the morning session, indicating that Kenya has pertinent issues that need to be addressed other than the impeachment motion.
“Kenyans have said, Kitui Central in particular, Kufa Makanga, Kufa Dereva, Kufa Mechanic, because Kenyans have more serious issues, and when they die, we want a renewal of this country,” he said in parliament.
Despite their spirited fight, their colleagues prosecuted their cases, pushing for the ouster of DP Gachagua, who is expected to present himself at the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, to defend himself.
