Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa has questioned the leadership of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in his newly formed Democratic Citizens Party (DCP), claiming he is unfit to head any political outfit due to his impeachment history.

In an undated video shared on his official X account on Friday, May 23, 2025, Barasa stressed that his concern was not with the formation of a new political party but with the integrity of its leader.

The outspoken MP added that anyone impeached from public office, such as Gachagua, should not be given any leadership position, including in political parties.

Tuko na vyama vingi vya kisiasa hapa Kenya, na chama ambacho kiliumbwa hivi majuzi mimi sina shida na hicho chama, Shida yangu ni kwamba. We need to have a discussion as Kenyans as to whether a person who left office by way of impeachment is allowed by our laws to be a party leader of a political party,” Barasa said.

“That party should be led by an individual who is not an impeache. When you are impeached, you are not fit to hold public office; even you are not fit to chair a funeral committee. That is my only problem.”

Barasa on DCP’s outfit

He went on to describe DCP as a tribal outfit, in contrast to parties like UDA and ODM, which he characterised as national. He said the formation of DCP appears to be based on ethnic grounds, particularly favouring Central Kenya.

“The only difference between that party and UDA and ODM is that it is a tribal party is not a national party, because if you look at the objectives of why that party was formed, if the statement of Rigathi Gachagua is something to go by, it appears that it is a central Kenya party because he has been saying central Kenya has been duped because it went to the government without their own political party,” Barasa added.

DCP’s official launch

Barasa’s opinion comes after the party leadership announced that DCP will be officially launched on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Kasarani Stadium Gymnasium.

The party’s deputy leader, Cleophas Malala, took to his social media channels on Wednesday, May 22, 2025, to showcase proof of payment and booking receipts, confirming the party’s commitment to the upcoming event.

“DCP Party Launch is Scheduled for the 3rd of June 2025 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena,” Malala announced.

Malala also shared a letter addressed to the management of the Kasarani Sports Gymnasium on May 20, 2025, by DCP’s Secretary General, formally requesting approval to hold the event, which is expected to draw a crowd of over 5,000 attendees. These will include party delegates, invited guests, and members of the press.

To secure the venue, the party has paid Ksh3.708 million, an indication of the scale and seriousness of the event.
