The launch of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) by former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took place on May 15, 2025, at the party’s headquarters on Musa Gitau Road in Lavington, Nairobi.
The event was intended to unveil the DCP as Gachagua’s new political vehicle after resigning from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 12, 2025, aiming to consolidate support in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party’s symbol is a listening ear, with the slogan Skiza Wakenya (Listen to Kenyans) and colours neon green, rufous red, and white.
Gachagua appointed himself party leader and named interim officials, including Cleophas Malala as deputy leader, Mithika Linturi as national organising secretary, and Cate Waruguru as national women’s leader.
However, the launch was disrupted by chaos after a group of suspected goons stormed the venue, forcing Rigathi Gachagua’s security team to fire warning shots in the air to disperse the crowd.
Several people caught up in the commotion were assaulted in full view of media cameras.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki condemned the violence and called for political tolerance and a shift towards issue-based politics.
