Kenya Police Bullets kicked off their campaign to win a second straight Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Premier League title with a resounding 3-0 victory against promoted side KISPED Kenya at Police Sacco Stadium on Saturday.
Spurred on by a huge crowd that turned up to watch the game, Police looked dangerous from the onset but they had to wait until the 39th minute to open the scores.
It was Lydia Akoth, who put the the Bullets ahead after she capitalised on a loose ball inside KISPED danger zone to stab the ball to an empty net.
Before taking the lead, Bullets, who won the league title last season without losing a single game, should have scored in the 27th minute but Akoth’s acrobatic effort from outside the box went inches wide.
Police Bullets went into the half-time break enjoying a 1-0 lead and on resumption Rebecca Okwaro should have doubled their lead but KISPED goalkeeper saved her well-struck effort.
A few minutes later, Bullets made their first change, Jane Hato coming in for Mary Nthambi and they missed another open chance in the 51st minute when Hato laid a neat pass to Akoth, but her weak shot was punched out for a fruitless corner.
However, four minutes later, Okwaro made amends for her missed chance in the first half after she drilled home the second following a good pass from Hato. In the 63rd minute, Okwaro struck home the third, her second of the day, to propel Bullets to their first win of the season.
At the end of the game, Akoth was named man of the match by Bullets fans for having scored the team’s first goal of the 2024/25 campaign. Akoth said: “Thank you to our fans for naming me Woman of the Match. Your support means so much and will motivate the entire team to work harder in the upcoming matches.”
Meanwhile, at Moi Stadium in Kisumu, Vihiga Queens earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over a determined Ulinzi Starlets side. The match saw both teams exchange chances, but a lone striker in the 89th minute courtesy of Providence Mukalo was enough to claim the victory.
In another match, Kibera Soccer Women recorded a 2-0 victory over Bungoma Queens at National Polytechnic, Bungoma. Nyakoa Amina put Kibera ahead with an early goal in the 10th minute, while Anna Arusi sealed the win with a last-minute strike in the 90th minute, ensuring Kibera left Bungoma with all three points.
