Police ban anti-government protests

Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has outlawed any planned protests in the Nairobi Central Business District and its surroundings until further notice.

In a statement issued late on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, the Acting IG noted that the protests in Nairobi and other areas have been banned due to a lack of proper leadership to coordinate with police to enable peaceful demonstrations.

He further noted that the police have placed an embargo on protests due to public safety.

Split in Azimio coalition on dialogue

Azimio coalition in apparent split concerning the planned dialogue between President William Ruto and the multi-sectoral stakeholders in the country.

ODM’s decision to support dialogue came after the party held a Parliamentary Group and the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Azimio affiliate parties have boldly opposed the calls for national dialogue. Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K Eugene Wamalwa, Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua and Jubilee’s Jeremiah Kioni have also rejected the calls for dialogue.

Blackout in 5 counties

A power outage scheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2024, is set to impact five Counties across Kenya, according to the latest announcement from Kenya Power.

The blackout, which is planned for maintenance purposes, will affect several areas at different times of the day.

Kenya Power said the Thursday power interruption will affect Nairobi, Kiambu, Busia, Mombasa and Kilifi Counties.
