How Musingu High Scorpions stung Kakamega High Commandos in bad-tempered replay

Defending champions Musingu High School’s Scorpions edged archrivals Kakamega High’s Green Commandos 1-0 in a tense replay final marred by chaos and referee intimidation, as Agai Secondary cruised past Rapogi High 4-1 to keep their Nyanza regional hopes alive in rip-roaring school games action across Western and Nyanza.
Musingu High School’s football team, fondly known as Scorpions among students and Kakamega County fans, scored the lone goal in the 30th minute of the first half through Kevin Manani to qualify for the ongoing Western Regional Secondary Schools ball games at Mumias Sports Complex.
Manani latched onto a cross from teammate Eugene Okochin to rifle in the all-important goal during the rematch played at Chavakali Sportsground.
Scorpions coach Brandson Mwenamo, in an interview on July 11, 2025, with People Sports after the match, said, “It was a tight and good game. A balanced match, but we were on top of the proceedings.”
However, Musingu’s coach, Mwenamo, decried scenes of indiscipline exhibited by Green Commandos players, who at some point during the rematch threatened to attack the centre referee after one of their players was red-carded for maliciously stepping on a Musingu player.
“Tempers flared when the referee awarded the offending Kakamega High Green Commandos player a red card, and his teammates bayed for the referee’s blood. The besieged referee withdrew the red card, and the rematch continued, with Musingu Scorpions emerging victorious,” Mwenamo recalled.
“We were determined to stamp our authority as Kakamega County Secondary Schools boys’ football kings during the rematch against our archrivals, who have been perpetual thorns in our flesh, year in and year out, with petitions against Musingu High football team. Green Commandos have never accepted a Musingu County football victory.”
“Musingu will now represent Kakamega County at the ongoing Western Regional Secondary Schools ball games at Mumias Sports Complex. The regional games were going on with athletes in other disciplines competing, except boys’ football, which was awaiting the rematch stalemate between Musingu and Kakamega High, resolved through Thursday’s replay,” Mwenamo explained.
Humiliated Green Commandos, last Saturday, July 5, 2025, caused drama when they refused a rematch against Scorpions.
The rematch had been ordered by the Kakamega County Secondary Schools Sports Association (KCSSSA) games jury after both teams were accused of fielding ineligible players.
Elsewhere, at the ongoing Nyanza Regional Secondary Schools ball games, Kisumu County boys’ football representatives Agai Mixed Secondary School walloped Rapogi High 4-1 at Moi Stadium in Kisumu City, scoring all four goals in the second half through Moses Otieno, Abdul Owino and a brace by Rogers Onyango.
In an interview with People Sports, Agai Mixed Secondary School principal and team coach Gordon Akoko stated, “In fact, we were under pressure to win against Rapogi after St Mary’s Yala pipped us 2-0 in an earlier match at Moi Stadium. It was a tough match. Yala likely used magic to beat us. You could not believe how St Mary’s Yala’s two goals sailed through.”
