Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has successfully resubmitted his signatures to the Electoral Commission, clearing his way to run for the country’s presidency in the August election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had told Kalonzo to resubmit signatures supporting his presidential bid, even as his allies insisted he had rejoined Azimio la Umoja coalition, effectively giving up the State House race.

On Friday, the electoral agency locked the Wiper boss out of the August 9 polls on a technicality after he failed to present a list of his supporters in the required Microsoft Excel sheet.

In a letter to the Wiper Party National Elections Board chairperson Agatha Solitei, the electoral body chief Wafula Chebukati said the party had until yesterday to resubmit the signatures in the prescribed format.

Acceded to request

“The commission has considered and acceded to your request to submit the soft copy of your list of supporters in Excel format by May 29, 2022, at 9am at Bomas of Kenya, failing which your documentation will not be certified as compliant,” said Chebukati.

Chebukati’s letter was in response to a protest letter by the party dated May 27 over the decision to disqualify its presidential aspirant. The commission had early last month instructed presidential hopefuls to submit signatures of 48,000 supporters in both hardcopy and softcopy (Excel format).

But yesterday, Ms Solitei said the Wiper Party had submitted the required documents in the format desired. Said Solitei: “Kalonzo’s documents were presented to IEBC, collected from 33 counties (against the required 24 counties), on May 25 on hard and soft copy as specified by the IEBC in their letter of May 19, 2022.”
