Youngster Cherotich now shifts focus to Diamond League
World Under-20 3000 metres steeplechase champion Faith Cherotich has trained her eyes on the Diamond League in Berlin, Germany where she debuts next month.
Cherotich who bagged the gold medal in the just concluded World U20 Athletics Championship held in Cali, Colombia will be competing in 5000m in the Diamond League.
Her coach Bernard Rono says the budding track star has been preparing for the world championships ahead of the league which is slated for September 4.
Rono says the athlete is yearning to try her feet in the new race and the new event too saying this is manifestation that she is ready to conquer the senior junior category moving forward.
“She (Cherotich) has developed an interest in the diamond league and we have trained and advised her accordingly. We are confident she will do well in the upcoming outing,” said Rono.
The tactician revealed that Cherotich has been involved in rigorous training ahead of the diamond league saying the youngster is not only in good shape but raring to go.
A Form Three student at Kalyet Secondary School in Kipkelion West Constituency, Kericho County, Cherotich trains at Kalyet Camp under the watchful eyes of Rono who has been puring praises on her due to her dedication in the work-outs.
“The athlete has a bright future and I must say she is set to go places in her career,” Rono quipped.
Cherotich clinched bronze medical during the Kip Keino continental tour that was held in Nairobi recently to send a strong statement of intent.
Meanwhile, residents of Nauro village in Kipkelion Constituency where the athlete hails from are still congratulating her after emerging the world champion in 3000m Steeplechase in the just concluded World U20 Athletics Championships in Colombia.
The residents’ representatives Moses Rotich and her former teacher Wesley Siele said they were proud of the athlete for putting the village in the global map.
Cherotich’s mother Ann Keter said her daughter had assured her that she would clinch the gold medal ahead of the championships, a promise which came to pass.
“As her loving mother, I’m proud of her for having conquered the world and this is a legacy I hope she shall leave to the family,” said an elated Keter.
