South Africa’s Wildschutt outshines Kenya’s Kiptoo, Kurgat in Austin Cross Country
Adriaan Wildschutt of South Africa emerged as the winner during the Austin Cross Country, beating Kenya’s Edwin Kurgat and Wesley Kiptoo on Friday, December 1, 2023.
Wildschutt timed 22:08, while Kurgat came in second in 22:12, with Kiptoo claiming the last podium slot after running for 22:15.
Kurgat was the defending champion but failed to retain the title after facing stiff competition from the South African and Kiptoo.
Tight tussle
Meanwhile, Kiptoo was on the lead as the race completed the first mile in 4:25. The Kenyan started strongly, as he was just ahead of six men who made up the leading pack.
The lead group was reduced to five after David Ribich dropped, leaving Kiptoo, Kurgat, Wildschutt, Charles Hicks, and Ahmed Muhumed jostling for the leading position.
Kiptoo then moved back to the pack midway through the third lap as the second circuit was covered in 4:26 before Kiptoo moved to the back of the pack midway through the third lap, with Wildschutt pushing the pace, according to World Athletics.
Wildschutt proved to be a strong candidate and rival to the Kenyan unit as he led through the three-mile mark in 13:12 after a 4:20 lap. The group led by the South African, the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships runner-up who placed 14th in Austin last year, covered the penultimate mile in 4:22.

Kenyans outclassed
At this point, Wildschutt, Kurgat, Hicks, and Kiptoo were in contention for the first-place finish.
Kurgat and Wildschutt engaged in a tight tussle with 20 minutes to go, with Kiptoo making strides to overtake Hicks and move to the third position.
Wildschutt eventually outshone Kurgat and won the title four seconds ahead of the Kenyan.
Kiptoo managed to finish third ahead of Britain’s 2022 NCAA champion Hicks, who recorded the same time for fourth, while USA’s Muhumed was fifth in 22:27.
