It’s now more than a year and one month since the gruesome murder of the country’s celebrated track star Agnes Tirop by her estranged husband Ibrahim Rotich. A committee was formed by former Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed to probe the same but has yet to come with any finding.

Initially, the immediate former  Sports minister had given the committee chaired by former two-time marathon world champion Catherine Ndereba and deputised by Sports Registrar Rose Wasike, 100 days to deliver the report, but a year later and after spending Sh 300 million of taxpayers’ money in a single seminar to look into the issue early this year, there is still nothing to show for it whereas a committee constituted by the same CS to investigate Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Nick Mwendwa in November last year, spent roughly two weeks to come up with a comprehensive report.

When asked about the much-awaited report that would help in resolving the issue of violence and sexual offences in Kenya’s sports, Ndereba confirmed it was not ready because of a number of issues and promised to give a comprehensive report after consulting the new Sports minister Ababu Namwamba.

“The progress of the report was hindered by lack of proper funding and the fact that some members of the committee had to travel to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games. I will give a proper response after I meet the new Sports CS,” she told People Sport.

A section of sports athletes and administrators, however, feel that the report may have hit a dead end as it may be touching on some top sports officials who have in one way or the other been adversely mentioned for sexual offences.

Several local associations have been mentioned when it comes to sexual offences, ranging from athletics, basketball, volleyball, hockey and football, but little action or none has been taken.

Rotich was charged with Tirop’s killing which left the athletics fraternity shell-shocked after which he pleaded not guilty in a Kenyan court.

Another Kenyan athlete Damaris Muthee Mutua, a Kenyan-born distance runner who competed for Bahrain, was found dead at the home of her boyfriend.
