We lost to Kakamega Homeboyz because of ‘our mistakes’, says AFC Leopards’ Aussems
AFC Leopards coach Patrick Aussems believes individual mistakes by his side helped Kakamega Homeboyz to defeat his side 2-1 in the semi-finals of the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup on Saturday.
Two quick goals courtesy of strikers Moses Shummah and Kevin Amwayi sent Homeboyz to their first-ever final of the domestic competition while ending Ingwe’s only hope of winning silverware this campaign at Nyayo Stadium.
“What else can I say… what can I say really, we can only blame ourselves because we committed two individual mistakes and we got punished,” the 58-year-old Belgian tactician told People Daily Sports.
“We did not play the way I wanted us to play especially in the first half because we gave them [Homeboyz] too much room to dictate the tempo and you know against such a team that is defending very well, it becomes difficult to get your way back if you concede the way we did.”
AFC almost staged a late comeback after Cliff Nyakeya had reduced the deficit but according to Aussems, there was not enough time to salvage the game.
“We scored only a few minutes to the end of the game but Homeboyz defended really well and we did not have enough time to equalise and even take the game to extra-time or penalties,” added Aussems.
Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo praised his charges for a resilient display insisting the victory was for the team fans.
“The victory was very important for the Homeboyz family, our team, and our fans, and for the history of the team,” said Odhiambo.
“We had already decided before this game that whatever happens at the end, AFC must lose, they [AFC] had no option to get away without defeat and whatever it could take they had to lose, and they have lost.”
Meanwhile, Tusker coach Rober Matano remained confident his side was on track to clinch a double this campaign after defeating Ulinzi Stars 1-0 in the early kick-off contest to reach the final.
“We all know Ulinzi are a well-organised team, and very strong in all departments, so we played knowing it will not be an easy game for us,” said Matano adding: “I insist winning the league and FKF Cup remains our ultimate goal and I know it is achievable.”
Tusker were forced to wait until the 90th minute to get the all-important goal when substitute Erick Otieno headed home from the far post after a delivery from Levin Joseph. Tusker, who will face Homeboyz in the final, are still in the race to win the Premier League title with only four matches remaining to conclude the season.
The Brewers are currently sitting top of the 18-team table with 64 points from 30 matches, one more than second-placed Gor Mahia, who have played the same number of matches.
