Wanga rallies Kenyans to turn up in Homa Bay for Gor-Leopard’s derby

For the first time in history, the iconic Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will be played outside Nairobi, and Governor Gladys Wanga is calling on fans across the nation to descend on Homa Bay for the milestone match.
The 97th edition of Kenya’s most electrifying football rivalry is set for Monday, June 2,2025 at the newly refurbished Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, with kickoff at 3:00 PM.
“History in the making! For the first time ever, the legendary Mashemeji Derby is leaving Nairobi and taking over Raila Odinga Stadium Homa Bay,” Wanga declared on Friday, May 30,2025. “Two giants. One historic pitch. Millions of emotions.”
Stadium sparks excitement
The fixture, initially slated for May 11,2025 was postponed due to the ongoing renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums ahead of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Gor Mahia rejected FKF’s alternative venue, Ulinzi Sports Complex, citing concerns over infrastructure and capacity. Their decision to move the derby to Homa Bay set the stage for a historic moment in Kenyan football.
“Come witness passion, drama, and unforgettable football action,” Wanga added. “Karibuni sana, The Bay of Endless Potential!”
The venue, which will also host Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, is expected to be filled to the brim as fans from across Kenya flock to the lakeside county.
Derby with high stakes
Beyond the rivalry, the match could shape the title race. Gor Mahia, sitting third with 54 points, must beat Leopards and hope league leaders Kenya Police FC slip in their game against Shabana FC.
A loss or draw could seal the championship for Police.
Adding to the tension, Gor Mahia’s new coaching duo, club legend Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno and Michael Nam, will be in charge after replacing Serbian coach Sinisa Mihic earlier this month.
Their mission? To deliver Gor’s 22nd league title and fourth consecutive championship.
Legacy, pride, and energy
The last time these two giants met the match ended in a goalless draw at Nyayo Stadium, underscoring the intensity of the fixture. In total, Gor Mahia leads with 33 wins, Leopards have 28, and 35 encounters have ended in draws.

“It’s more than a match,” Wanga said. “It’s a celebration of football, community, and what we can achieve when we believe in our potential.”
The decision to move the derby to Homa Bay has sparked nationwide excitement.
Other leaders, including President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga, and regional leaders, are expected to attend the match following the Madaraka Day celebrations.
