Wambui returns to defend title as NCBA Golf Series tees off in Ruiru

At least 260 golfers are set to tee off at Ruiru Sports Club today, June 21, 2025, as the 15th leg of the 2025 NCBA Golf Series gets underway, with reigning Ladies Division One champion Catherine Wambui among the top contenders expected to light up the par-73 course.
Wambui, who returns to defend her title, will begin her round at 11:40 am from the 10th hole, grouped alongside Kabura Kamau, George Thirimu and K Mutwiri.
The tournament marks the 15th qualifying round of this year’s campaign and will feature intense competition across various categories, including Overall Men Gross Winner, Overall Lady Gross Winner, Men and Ladies Division Two winners, Division Three Overall Winner, as well as the Junior Winner.
Moreover, winners from each category will book coveted slots in the Grand Finale slated for later in the year.
Speaking ahead of today’s action, NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora noted, “After a very busy outing last weekend at Karen and in Uganda, we shift gears this Saturday to Ruiru for the next qualifying leg. We remain dedicated to supporting the growth and development of golf across the country. Over the years, Ruiru Sports Club has proven to be an excellent host for this leg of the series, providing a fantastic environment for competition. We are proud to continue this tradition and look forward to another memorable tournament this weekend.”
In 2024 at Ruiru, Angelus Maina posted 36 stableford points to clinch the Men’s Division One crown, while Wambui triumphed in the Ladies’ Division One with a round of 29 points.
The Ruiru event comes hot on the heels of a successful East African doubleheader last weekend, which saw simultaneous tournaments held at Karen Country Club in Nairobi and Uganda Golf Club in Kampala, drawing a combined field of 460 players.
At Karen, Gilbert Maina fired an impressive 74 gross off handicap 4 to emerge as the overall winner, while Koki Muia claimed the Ladies’ Gross title with a score of 81.
Division One honours went to Peter Marandu (40 points, HC 11), as Betty Gacheru (42 points, HC 16) topped the Division Two Ladies’ category.
Cyllus Onyango (HC 14) won Men’s Division Two with 41 points on countback.
In Division Three, Kenneth Muraguri (HC 26) secured top prize with 41 points on countback, while rising star Nathan Gikemi (HC 24) bagged the junior title after carding 39 points.
Meanwhile, in Kampala, Gabriel Amani stood out at Uganda Golf Club with a dominant 47-point performance to win overall honours. He led a group of five players who qualified for the grand finale set for November.
Other top performers included Godwill Bindeeba, who clinched the Men’s Division One title with 45 points, and Judith Komugisha, who successfully defended her Ladies’ crown.
