Triumphant Team Kenya jets back from Africa Youth Games

The last batch of the next generation of Kenyan athletes taking part in the Africa Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, returned to the country following the conclusion of the continental championship on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

In a statement on its Facebook on Monday, December 22, 2025, the chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, Shadrack Maluki, led the delegation of the sportsmen who were received by jubilant bystanders following a successful spell in the championship.

Earlier, the karate team, which brought home a couple of medals, and their athletics counterparts were the first teams to return.

The teams jetted back four days ago after their stint at the ongoing games.

The karate team brought back two bronze medals.

In the team sports, the Kenya beach handball team, karate and 3×3 basketball girls were among the standout performers. Neema Chembe led the beach handball team to a silver finish in the category after their quest for gold ended at the final hurdle after falling to Senegal.

Weightlifters shine in Angola

The weightlifting category produced Kenya’s most standout performance with a total of 12 medals.

Mercy Kerubo claimed the discipline plaudits after inspiring the ladies to three gold medals. Her success added up to Ace Hodd Waiyaki and Lina Amanda’s feat of three medals on Thursday, December 18.

Waiyaki and Amanda each won three medals as Team Kenya powered to nine medals with a prolific showing of strength and grit.

The U16 3×3 basketball team also secured a finish on the podium with a 10-7 victory over Tunisia on Wednesday, December 20, 2025.

The success prompted congratulatory messages from the Kenya Basketball Federation after their final game in the championship held in Luanda.

Bronze

“Congratulations once again to our young lionesses for winning bronze, closing the basketball year on a high,” the KBF statement read.

In total Kenya’s medal haul from the games peaked at 35.

The team accumulated seven bronze and 11 silver medals and struck gold 17 times to seal the emphatic show in the fourth edition of the Youth Championship.
