Shabana falter in title race
By Barry.Silah, February 20, 2023
Shabana FC are quickly stuttering as the national Super League title race intensifies following a 1-0 loss in the championship on Saturday against neighbours Gusii FC.
Though still enjoying a slim lead of only two points, the six points lost in succession in two matches has caused anxiety.
With 25 points in the bag, Tore Bobe, who have played 11 matches thus far, look suddenly shaky, especially after their loss to Kibera Black Stars a fortnight ago.
There was a bit of controversy when Shabana fans accosted the centre referee after the derby played at Gusii Stadium, with claims of poor officiating prompting security personnel to be called to restore order. Gusii FC are now the team of the moment with Kassim Junior’s charges third on the log with 21 points and a game in hand.
This is the first team this season to get full points off two of the frontrunners without conceding a goal.
They have reported a very impressive performance this season scoring 21 goals and conceding seven while keeping six clean sheets in their ten matches so far.
Action witnessed
The youthful team has been a joy to watch this season and is threatening to break the normal order as the season flows .
Meanwhile, Mara Sugar FC came from behind to win 3-1 against Silibwet Leons FC yesterday. The win pushes them to fifth on the log with 20 points off 12 matches.
The match played at Awendo Green Stadium had all manner of action witnessed. The visiting side scored first via Laktano Kiprotich in the ninth minute.
However, a quick reaction from Mara saw the red-hot Philemon Nyakwaka get a brace inside five minutes with his equaliser coming in the 31st minute of play while his end in the 36th minute coming against the run of play.
The Sugarmen closed the game in the 62nd minute through a Mohamed Barasa effort. The struggling Leons are in 16th place with only seven points.
Elsewhere Kibera Black Stars kept the faith after their last loss away at Awendo, by beating Migori Youth 2-0 in Ligi Ndogo Grounds in a weekend encounter.
Goals by John Njoroge in the 53rd minute and Richdonald Bolo in the 66th minute were enough to keep Evans Ogutu’s charges in good space towards the apex of the League.
With 23 points off 11 matches, the Slum Boys know full well that sustained pressure and consistency going forward will be critical to the end of the campaign.
In other matches, Vihiga United FC ran riot at Mumias Complex with a 5-1 hammering of visiting SS Assad FC. The huge win pushes the Westerners to 10 points off 11 matches albeit with an 11-goal difference at the moment. Oscar Wanambisi in the 11th minute before Michael Adongo got his own in the 34th minute from six yards after good box play. Godrick Gaduka ensured it was a cruising first half with a third effort for the hosts for a 3-0 half-time lead. Amos Kagadi and Morgan Ambuka had their goals in the second half in the 72nd minute and 89th minute with Assad getting their consolation in the 55th minute via Beja Nyamawi.
