Senator Hamida rallies support for Harambee Stars ahead of CHAN opener
As Kenya prepares to kick off its African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) campaign on home soil, Senator Hamida Kibwana has emerged as one of the most vocal champions of national support for the Harambee Stars.
The tournament opener against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is set for Sunday, August 3, 2025, at 3:00 PM EAT at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
“All set to support our Harambee Stars this Sunday as they face DR Congo in the CHAN tournament. Proud to stand with Kenya—on and off the pitch,” Senator Hamida posted on X on August 1, 2025, rallying fans across the nation.
Her message comes as excitement surges around the historic event, which Kenya is co-hosting alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Tickets for the opening fixture have already sold out, underscoring public anticipation.

Tough start
Kenya faces a stern test in their opening match against DR Congo, a side widely tipped as one of the tournament favourites. The Congolese, nicknamed the Red Devils, qualified after eliminating Equatorial Guinea with a 2-1 aggregate win. Led by experienced coach Barthélémy Ngatsono, the team is known for a blend of solid defence and sharp counterattacking play.
A key figure for DR Congo is goalkeeper Chelcy Bonazebi, whose height and aerial prowess make him a crucial asset. The side is entering its fifth CHAN tournament appearance, aiming to improve on past campaigns that saw them exit in the quarter-finals in 2018 and 2020.
Their final preparation included a friendly against South Sudan’s Jamus SC on July 29 in Dar es Salaam, where they faced Kenyan coach Godfrey Oduor and defender Hannif Wesonga. The tune-up provided a last-minute tactical assessment before Sunday’s crucial clash.
Morocco arrives, atmosphere builds
Group A is shaping up to be highly competitive, featuring Kenya, DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. The arrival of two-time champions Morocco in Nairobi on July 28 has further raised the stakes. Defender Marouane Louadni expressed confidence upon arrival: “We are excited to be here and ready for CHAN. I already love Nairobi; the weather is great, and we are looking forward to a successful tournament.”
Morocco will face Angola in Sunday’s second match, capping off a thrilling opening day. With Senator Hamida’s public backing and a full-capacity crowd expected at Kasarani, the Harambee Stars will look to channel national pride into performance as they begin their CHAN journey.
