Ruto hails Cheruiyot, Chepchirchir for stellar performance at Doha Diamond League

President William Ruto has praised Kenya’s athletics team for their outstanding performance at the 2025 Doha Diamond League, where the country’s runners delivered a series of impressive victories on the international stage.
In a message shared on his official X account on Saturday, May 17, Ruto singled out Reynold Cheruiyot, Nelly Chepchirchir, Faith Cherotich, Susan Lokayo Ejore, and Wyclife Kinyamal for their exceptional showings at the prestigious meet.
“We salute our athletics team for representing us brilliantly at the 2025 Doha Diamond League, bringing home multiple victories,” Ruto wrote.

“Your sterling performance has filled the nation with pride,” he added.
Impressive achievements
Reynold Cheruiyot took top honours in the men’s 5,000m, while Nelly Chepchirchir emerged victorious in the women’s 1,500m.

Faith Cherotich claimed gold in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, a race she won in a time of 9:05:26.
Ejore placed second in the same 1,500m race won by Chepchirchir, while Wyclife Kinyamal earned a third-place finish in the men’s 800m.
Congratulatory messages
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was among several high-ranking officials who joined in applauding the athletes for their display of excellence.
“Congratulations, Faith Cherotich, on your unforgettable finish to win the 3,000m steeplechase in the Doha Diamond League this evening,” Murkomen wrote on his X account on May 16, 2025.
“Kudos to Nelly Chepchirchir and Reynold Cheruiyot, too, for the remarkable wins… The great Kenyan winning spirit was on full display tonight. Immensely proud of all of you who participated. You continue to inspire our nation,” he added.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo also commended the athletes, noting that their achievements embody the values of discipline, hard work, and unity that define the Kenyan identity.
“We applaud our athletics team for their remarkable achievements… Congratulations for flying the Kenyan flag high with honour and dignity!” Omollo wrote on his X account on May 16, 2025.
Principal Secretary in the State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira, hailed the athletes for their historic runs.
“The triumphs… are no mean feat on the tracks of time. We celebrate your excellence and the positive example you set for all Kenyans,” he wrote on his X account on May 17, 2025.
From the National Assembly, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi celebrated Cherotich’s tenacity, calling her win in the steeplechase a display of Kenya’s attitude of never giving up.
“Congratulations to youngster Faith Cherotich for winning the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Doha Diamond League in 9:05:26, displaying Kenya’s attitude of never giving up,” Sudi wrote on his X account on May 16, 2025.
