President William Ruto has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to hosting the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in February 2025, declaring significant progress in preparations to ensure the tournament’s success.

The President announced that renovations at key venues, including Moi Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, are on track and will meet international standards ahead of the event.

In addition to these premier stadiums, upgrades are underway at the Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi, as well as Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu, which will serve as training facilities for participating teams.

These projects, Ruto stated, are part of Kenya’s broader effort to deliver a world-class tournament.

“Kenya is pulling all the stops to be ready to host the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in February 2025. I thank the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for their confidence in our country’s ability to host the games,” Ruto said on Friday, December 20, 2024, after a meeting at State House with key stakeholders.

The President hosted CAF President Patrice Motsepe and his delegation at State House, Nairobi, to discuss Kenya’s readiness for CHAN.

Motsepe was accompanied by CAF Fourth Vice-President Seidou Mbombo Njoya and Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba.

The African Nations Championships is a premier football tournament reserved exclusively for players competing in their domestic leagues, offering a platform for showcasing local talent.

Kenya’s successful bid to host the event marks a significant milestone in its sports development agenda and positions the nation as an emerging hub for international sports.

President Ruto emphasized that hosting CHAN not only highlights Kenya’s commitment to football but also showcases its readiness to host global sporting events.

The revamped facilities are expected to meet the high standards set by CAF and enhance the country’s sports infrastructure for future endeavours.

With less than two months until kickoff in February 2024, Kenya’s efforts to complete renovations and coordinate logistics underscore its determination to deliver an exceptional tournament.

The President’s engagement with CAF officials signals a collaborative approach to ensuring the games’ success and solidifying Kenya’s reputation on the continental sports stage.
