As the national sevens circuit shifts to Nakuru for the much-anticipated Prinsloo 7s from Saturday, August 2, 2025, to Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the Nakuru Athletics Club, Menengai Oilers head coach Geoffrey Ominde has made notable adjustments to his squad in a bid to revive the team’s campaign after an inconsistent performance at the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa.

The trio return

Ominde has introduced four changes to the lineup, welcoming back the experienced trio of John Okoth, Stephen Arunga, and Eric Ogutu. Each of the three will be making their first Sevens appearance of the season after missing out on the first leg outing held in Mombasa last weekend. Their return is expected to provide much-needed stability and leadership within the team.

Adding to the excitement is the debut of Philip Okeyo, a new signing who has caught the eye during training sessions. Okeyo’s inclusion is seen as a strategic move to inject fresh energy and creativity into the side as Oilers seek to bounce back after a dismal performance at the Driftwood 7s.

With a blend of seasoned returnees and emerging talent, the team heads to the Prinsloo 7s determined to put their Driftwood missteps behind them and make a stronger statement in the second leg of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit.

Fixtures

At the tournament, hosts Nakuru headline Pool A. They will be joined by Kenya Harlequin, Stallions and MSC Rugby. Pool B features defending Prinsloo champions Strathmore Leos, who will face competition from Menengai Oilers, Daystar Falcons, and Zetech Oaks.

KCB Rugby Club headlines Pool C, alongside Nondescript, CUEA and Kisumu. The Bankers will be looking to maintain their dominant run in the circuit. Pool D has Kabras Sugar RFC drawn with MMUST, Impala RFC, and Mwamba RFC.

This weekend’s outing will mark the second stop of the National Circuit. Launched in 2007, the tournament honours the legacy of South African rugby figure Peter Prinsloo, who played a pivotal role in reigniting the sport’s passion in Nakuru during the 1980s. Over time, it has established itself as a major highlight in Kenya’s rugby sevens calendar.
