A total of 408 teams are expected to feature at this year’s Nairobi Governors Cup football tournament set to be launched on August 12.

According to reliable sources at the Nairobi County offices, the teams will be drawn from all the 85 wards in Nairobi County and they will be divided into two administrative areas, namely Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nairobi East Branch and FKF Nairobi West Branch. The eventual winners of the inaugural competition are set to win lucrative cash prices, courtesy of Nairobi Governor Johnstone Sakaja.

“Plans are almost complete for the event which will bring together a total of 408 boys and girls teams with players of between 16 years and 20 years,” said a source who sought anonymity.

He added: “The Governor is expected to officially unveil the tournament’s organising committee this coming week to set the ball rolling, then a draw will be done before the August 12 official launch of the tournament that would run to December 17 to be preceded by the Nairobi Carnival at Uhuru Park.”

The five-month competition will be launched at the Dandora Stadium on August 12, as the Governor will also use the occasion to officially open the 10,000-seater facility which has been under construction for almost five years.
