A delegation of players and officials has jetted to Mombasa ahead of the ninth edition of the Mombasa Open Tong IL Moo Do martial arts championship.
Teams from the Philippines and Turkey arrived at the Moi International Airport on Sunday and are part of 20 nations from Asia, Europe, Middle East, North and South America that will take part in the December 18-19 competition at the Aga Khan Hall.
Speaking at the airport after receiving the delegation, Kenya Tong IL Moo Do Federation president Clarence Mwakio termed their arrival as a boost to local tourism at the coast.
“We have put everything in order to ensure the competition is successful, and we are happy because this is a boost to Local tourism as the players and officials are booked in a hotel in Mombasa,” said Mwakio.
Speaking after landing, World Tong-IL Moo Do vice president Dr Venus Augustine, alongside Turkey Tong IL Moo Do federation president thanked the Kenyan government for continuing to promote the sport.
“I am very happy to be here in Kenya and also happy to see Kenya promoting this sport. It’s very important for players and officials to play in an environment that is protected so we are happy for what Kenya is doing for us,” Augustine.
The founder of Tong-IL Moo-Do, great grand master Joon Ho Seuk, and the federation’s President Grandmaster Takamistu Hoshiko are all expected to grace the tournament.
Kenya, who are eight-time defending champions, will be gearing to defend its title after assembling a 50-members squad.
