A win at the 38th edition of the Impala Floodlit last weekend was another perfect Kenya Cup pre-season outing for the defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) ahead of the 2019/2020 kick-off on October 26.

KCB are hopeful to replicate last weekend’s performance that granted them a third-in-a-row Floodies title courtesy of a 23-14 win over Menengai Oilers at Impala Grounds. 

KCB first won the Floodies title in 2005 and proceeded to win it again in 2007, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

With eight titles, KCB, are the second most successful team behind Mean Machine with a title advantage while hosts Impala drop to third with seven.

The bankers scored three tries, a conversion, a drop goal and a penalty to beat Oilers single try and three penalties. 

Coming off the bench to complement a tensed 5-3 half time lead was new signing Levy Amunga with a penalty and a drop goal and a penalty while fellow substitute Shabaan Ahmed scored a try.

The 2019 Impala tournament has restored belief in Homeboyz who beat Harlequins 30-5 to finish third.

Oilers and Homeboyz are the teams to watch in the forthcoming Kenya Cup season courtesy of new signings and early preparation despite the two finishing eighth and ninth respectively in the previous season.

Closely contested

To reach the finals, KCB whitewashed Blak Blad 57-3 in the quarters and knocked out Homeboyz 38-14 in the semi-finals while Oilers kicked off campaign beating Impala 26-23 and later knocked out Harlequins 30-21 in the semi-finals.

Execution is part of the homework Oilers head coach Gibson Weru will be working on ahead of the season in the same pool with KCB, Harlequins, Homeboyz, Nakuru and Western Bulls in Conference A of the incoming season.

Host Impala Saracens lifted the Plate after a closely contested 17-15 triumph over Nondescripts in a Ngong Road derby.

Meanwhile, Strathmore Leos dethroned Mean Machine in the universities category winning 26-16.

The win for the Leos has opened the rivalry file against Mean Machine in the upcoming KRU Championship league where both teams will be on mission to regain their slots in the Kenya Cup league.

The Black Lion women’s franchise defended the women’s category after smashing the Black Panther 40-5 in the finals that was curtain raised by Schools finals won by Ofafa Jericho after downing Muhuri Muchiri 21-0.
