Owalo backs Gor Mahia’s new coach to succeed
Gor Mahia’s Deputy Patron Eliud Owalo has thrown his weight behind the club’s new choice for the head coach position, Charles Akonnor.
In a statement shared via his X page on Friday, August 1, 2025, the club deputy patron stated the tactician possesses the relevant skill to succeed at K’ogalo, backed by his past stints as manager and captain of the Ghanaian national team, the Black Stars.
Owallo made the remarks after meeting with the new trainer moments after the club announced him as the new coach succeeding Sinisa Mihic.

“Met the newly appointed Gor Mahia coach, Charles Akonnor this evening. With a checkered career as a long-serving Captain and later as coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, I verily believe that Akonnor has the wherewithal and technical capacity to turn around the fortunes of the mighty Gor Mahia.
Welcome to Kogalo, Charles Akannor,” he said.
According to the record, 21-time league champions, Akonnor, 51, will be in charge of the club after agreeing to a two-year contract.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach. The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned tactician. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor,” read a post from the club’s official X account dated August 1, 2025.

Other than the Black Stars, the coach featured prominently for Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg between 1998 and 2003, making 121 appearances and scoring 13 goals.
While offering a snippet of what his tenure would entail, Akonnor stressed the importance of investing in future talent.
“Having a good youth team in place is very important for the club… Developing players through the ranks is quite vital, and I am a believer in working through the stages to achieve the best, not quick fixes for success,” he stated.
Gor Mahia’s technical bench will also benefit from a robust backroom team. Ghanaian assistant coach Kobi-Mensah Bismark, formerly with Bechem United and Great Olympics, has signed a two-year deal and emphasised discipline and structure as key pillars of success.
He will be joined by video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo and goalkeeping coach Owu Ben, a former player with Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC.
The medical department has also been strengthened with the appointment of Brian Odongo, a sports medicine specialist, who will oversee player fitness and welfare throughout the season.
