Newly formed Sports and Recreation Professionals of Kenya (SRPK) has called for the review of the Sports Act as they sounded a warning to federations who don’t follow law and principles of good governance in conducting their businesses.

Speaking yesterday at the Heron Hotel in Nairobi during their launch, SRPK president Martin Yauma called on greater accountability on sport managers both at club level or national level.

“Discipline is essentially the model of running sports in the World today and as such for us,we would like to collaborate with Federations in the country to ensure this is key in their Management programs .We do not intend to supervise Associations but to help them do things in the right way,” he said adding that their focus was more on Team Managers, coaches and referees who were directly involved in Teams and Players.

SRPK is promising a revolutionary way of operations in the sector with membership warned of consequences of found to be errant.

“It is clear what the mandate of the Federations are and so we do not want to interfere with what they are meant to do under their own Constitutions and indeed the Sports Act 2010.We want to see a Professionally run entity devoid of scandal, politics or mismanagement. As such,we are out to enlist members into the fold with the aim of building capacity even to the office of the Sports Registrar,”added Yauma who was flanked by Treasurer Agnes Mandu, Executive Committee Member Florence Gitau and Central Management Committee member Charles Muchene.

The new body will endeavor to supply professionals and also and experts to Federations during in-competitions. “We want to have a synergy and we working relationship going forward.Indeed,we can assure the public that we are not duplicating roles or taking away anybody’s mandate. There will be no conflict of interest because we are non-aligned.

Therefore as a start, for us to make headway,we will first ensure those registered under us have some sort of certification in place from Institutions of note. This way,we will be able to monitor and assess performance of our people and institute any disciplinary measures if necessary for those not following rules “

The new team is currently on a mass recruitment drive while also talking to some of the registered Federations in the country.

“We are looking forward to collaborating even with International bodies like the Commonwealth to ensure we are a good stead. In matters of Governance,we definitely will hold our members to account and so performance at the best level is necessary,”offered Mandu.

SRPK has also urged the Sports Registrar to act tough on those that have not complied with the Law adding that theirs was only to support initiative. “Regulation will help and we are fully in support to the Office of the Registrar in this regard,”stated Yauma while calling on the forthcoming review of the Sports Act to also effectively address the gaps in the Kenya National Sports Council which was described as being non-effective.

At the same time, the group also warned that any of their members abetting or aiding in cheating or encouraging doping especially with Athletes will be blacklisted and sanctioned.
