My focus is to stay and help Gor, says McKinstry
Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has allayed fears of leaving the FKF Premier League champions by stating he will be with the club next season to challenge for CAF Champions League success.
The 37-year-old Northern Irish tactician joined K’Ogalo last July to replace German Andrea Spiers and he went ahead to guide the team to their record-extending 20th league title on the final day of the season last Sunday.
Gor Mahia defeated Nairobi City Stars 4-1 to reach 70 points, one more than second-placed Tusker, who defeated relegated Vihiga Bullets 4-0.
Despite facing a hostile reception from K’Ogalo fans, especially in the last three matches of the campaign, McKinstry (pictured) has assured he will extend his stay with the Kenyan champions.
“If you ask the club management they will tell you I began talking about next season in our dressing room last weekend as soon as we beat City Stars to be crowned champions,” explained McKinstry, adding: “My focus is to stay and help the team to win the league title yet again and have a successful campaign in the Champions League. I have told my technical bench not to celebrate for too long, we have a huge season coming up and that is where we need to shift our focus to. It was not an easy season; I arrived here when everything was in a mess.”
