The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) and LaLiga have collaborated to organise an exciting inter-media fun tournament to be hosted at the Galleria Arena in Nairobi this Saturday.

The event, which coincides with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Day, has garnered significant attention with the participation of 16 teams.

During the draw ceremony held at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday, Alvaro Abreu, the LaLiga delegate, expressed his delight in partnering with the association to promote the brand in the country.

Abreu emphasised the timeliness of this tournament in increasing public awareness about the brand.
“It’s such an honour to be here and more so that we are associating with journalists who write about sports. We are excited to host you and we hope to work with you going forward,” he said.

SJAK chairman James Waindi, who is also the People Daily Sports Editor, expressed his gratitude to the sponsors for making the event possible.

He highlighted that it has been some time since the association organised a fun day and thanked the sponsors for the support.

“Twenty teams had shown interest in competing in the event but we trimmed to 16 teams guided by the directive we had earlier shared. The teams are drawn across the country. But at the end of the day, it’s not all about the competition but the sportsmanship,” he said.

The tournament is sponsored by LaLiga, KCB, DStv and Safari Premium Drink. The winners will receive Sh50,000, the runners-up will be awarded Sh30,000, and the third-placed team will receive Sh20,000.

The 16 teams have been divided into four pools. Pool A consists of Radio Africa Group, Cape Media Group TV 47, Athletics News FC, and Royal Media Services. Pool B comprises Kenya Broadcast Corporation (KBC), CGTN, Freelance Journalists, and Supersport.

Pool C, nicknamed the “group of death,” features Nation FC, MediaMax, Makueni Journalists, and Standard Media FC.

Lastly, Pool D includes Kass FM, Mashinani FC, BBC, and Mozzart Bet Sports.
