Mathare plan to add more misery on hurting Matano as Tusker seeks to bounce back
Former Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Mathare United are out to add more misery on league rivals Tusker when the local league resumes on Saturday after a two-week break.
The two sides meet in an early kick-off at Machakos Stadium before they pave way for the Posta Rangers and Kakamega Homeboyz clash.
Tusker kicked off their title campaign on a wrong foot a fortnight ago, going down 5-2 against Gor Mahia and coach Robert ‘The Lion’ Matano is expected to come out like a wounded lion literally as they seek to bounce back from the humiliating defeat.
However, history is against Mathare. The ‘Slum Boys’ enjoy a better head-to-head record against the brewers, having beaten them three times and drawn once in their last four meetings.
“It’s going do be a different ball game because we don’t expect beat Tusker by five goals the way Gor did. I know Tusker are wounded and they would not want to lose two league matches in a row, but we are prepared for them and plan to add more misery to them,” said Mathare United coach Salim Ali.
He added: “We have a very good record against Tusker, having not lost to them in the last three years and we plan to continue with that trend. Out of our last four matches, we have won three and drawn one.”
Matano is, however, not looking at the head-to-head record and has told Mathare to expect the full wrath of a wounded lion.
“Losing is not in my mind, we went back to the drawing board after the defeat against Gor Mahia and we have corrected the mistakes. We are a full house, with no injuries nor suspensions, so we are going to be ruthless,” Matano said.
Mathare, who played to a barren draw against Bandari in their opening match, will be missing skipper Chrispin Oduor, who is nursing metatarsal injury, but Ali is confident the other players can do the job.
League debutants Wazito FC will be chasing their first win in top flight football when they visit Western Stima in Kisumu, while Ulinzi Stars welcome 2009 champions Sofapaka at Afraha Stadium in a match the visitors will be desperate to win after kicking off their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Rangers.
