AFC Leopards secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Gor Mahia in the 98th Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Julius Masaba scored the only goal of the match, giving Leopards a crucial win in front of a lively crowd.

The Mashemeji Derby, one of the most historic fixtures in Kenyan football, never fails to deliver intensity both on and off the pitch. This edition lived up to expectations as the two sides battled for pride, league points, and bragging rights.

The match had been rescheduled twice before settling on Nyayo Stadium due to CAF and state events that conflicted with initial dates. Despite the changes, the anticipation remained high, with fans filling the stands to enjoy the long-awaited encounter.

Leopards coach Fred Ambani made tactical substitutions to maintain energy and respond to injuries. Kayci Odhiambo was replaced by Kennedy Owino after going down injured in the 66th minute.

Later, Boniface Munyendo received a yellow card, prompting further adjustments with Victor Otieno and Kelly Madada entering the field in place of Boniface Munyendo and Victor Omune. Brian Wanyama and Emmanuel Lwangu were also earlier brought in to replace Tyson Otieno and Brian Nyongesa. These changes kept Leopards balanced while Gor Mahia pushed for an equaliser.

Masaba’s goal secures victory

The lone goal came in the 26th minute, following a well-executed team move. Masaba finished neatly, giving Leopards an early lead. Gor Mahia tried to respond immediately, but Leopards’ defence held firm.

Despite injuries to key players like Bryson Wangai and Lawrence Juma, Gor Mahia maintained pressure, but they could not break through.

Ambani remains unfazed by the derby atmosphere, keeping his unbeaten record intact. Remarkably, he has never lost a Mashemeji Derby, whether as a player or coach.

Ingwe held firm to secure all three points, moving up to sixth place on the FKF Premier League table with 17 points from 10 matches, just two behind Gor Mahia, who have now suffered consecutive defeats. For Leopards, the result brings a sense of redemption, as the team had drawn in both encounters with Gor Mahia last season.
