Mara Sugar earn National Super League promotion after Div One glory
Mara Sugar FC are the 2020/2021 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division One League Zone B championship.
By winning the league, the Narok county-based side has qualified for this coming Betika National Super League.
Mara secured an important 1-0 win over hard-fighting St Joseph’s FC at Awendo Green Stadium on Sunday in the league’s final fixture to finish the season on top of Zone B league with 59 points from 29 matches to grab the automatic promotion slot from Zone B.
Midfielder Reuben Mita, alias Raske, was the match hero as he scored what will remain as the most important goal for Mara Sugar in the entire campaign as the lone goal ensured that the Sugar Millers got all the three points to earn them promotion.
“We had the most difficult second leg and we almost lost the automatic qualification to NSL. However, God is good. He saw us through,” said Mara team manager Thomas Oduor.
Mara have now joined Zone A champions Naivas FC in the NSL while Luanda Vila who only missed out on the automatic promotion by a single point, finishing second in Zone B with 58 points, will have a second chance to try and grab the remaining third and final slot when they take on SS Assad FC who also finished second in Zone A, behind champions Naivas FC.
FKF yesterday said the FKF Division One 2020/21 season playoff match to determine the third team from the league to earn promotion to NSL is on and will be played this coming Sunday.
