Madoya stuns favourite Kibugu on final day to win Muthaiga Safari Tour event
Great Rift Valley Golf Club player Justus Madoya upset the form book yesterday following his -7 (67) score tally in the final round of the Safari Tour at the Park 71 Muthaiga Golf Club.
The duel was headed for a play-off with two-holes to go, before Madoya narrowly carried the day. Speaking to People Sport afterwards, Madoya attributed his victory to patience on the course and calculated execution.
“I am happy with the win though initially a bit surprised because I though we had tied with Kibugu. My game plan going in obviously was working on target approach and it worked.
“I am really encouraged ahead of the Karen Country Club tour because it is a course I am familiar with. With this win, I am very much in line for a slot at the Kenya Open cut so it is all about fine-tuning my game. This tournament has seen much improvements with players bringing their A-game so it keeps most of us on goes.
“My recent tour of Cote D’Ivoire and Congo for some events helped us a lot in terms of attitude and so I feel ready for a good year,” he stated.
Madoya who led by a shot against home favorite and third round leader Kibugu Mutahi had a solid run towards the title with a total 277 over the last four days of action. On Wednesday, his front nine scores helped a great deal for him to sail through for the ultimate prize.
Madoya who hit five birdies in the front nine holes was on cloud nine but had to endure a bit of frustration with a couple of pars in the second hole before finally closing out with a birdie on Hole 18 to secure his success.
Meanwhile home player Kibugu was mighty unlucky as he fell short by a single shot at his famed backyard despite a good run. Finishing the last day carding -6(69), he had a bit of a mishap at holes 2,7&11 where he hit bogeys.
However, overall, Kibugu maintained his calm and poise to sink five birdies with the rest of his game closing on pars.
His total of the week was a total 278 with the Round 4 finish being -4 for last year’s Magical Kenya Open local star player.
Eric Ooko of Golf Park was also incredible finishing in third spot with a score of -4 (70). Ooko incidentally had a morning session to forget at consecutive intervals with bogeys at holes 4,5&6 just after sinking two sweet birdies in holes 2&3.
However, his play at the back nine was gok enough to make recovery especially since he hit two birdies on holes 12&18 but in between it was all about cautious strokes with a par shot per hole to ensure he got out of the mud.
