Late goal secures St Joseph’s Boys Rift Valley football glory
St Joseph’s Boys High School retained their Rift Valley Region football title after edging out St Francis Boys High School, Kimuron of Elgeyo Marakwet County, with a 1-0 win in a thrilling final held at the Hill School grounds in Eldoret.
The Friday, July 11, 2025, winning goal came in the 87th minute, scored by Instin Simiyu, securing St Joseph’s a spot in the upcoming National Secondary Schools Term Two Games in Kakamega County, set for July 28th to August 2nd.
Team captain Charles Ochieng says the squad is determined to improve on last year’s performance, promising a better showing at the nationals.
“Last year we lost narrowly, but this time round we are going to do our best and secure the title,” said Ochieng.
Coach Amos Juma Wanda highlighted their training focus.
“We’ll be working on long balls, high balls, and corner attacks to sharpen our game.”
Last year, the Trans Nzoia County champions took home bronze, but this year, they are aiming for nothing less than gold.
In the girls’ soccer category, Nasokol Secondary School from West Pokot County defeated Itigo Girls High School from Nandi County 2-1 after extra time to claim the regional title.
Nasokol captain Naomi Mokeira expressed confidence in her team as they head to the nationals.
“We are going to work hard in our training and preparation,” said Mokeira.
Coach Lydiah Nekesa praised the team’s performance during regionals but noted areas for improvement.
“We are going to improve on some mistakes as we head to the nationals.”
In boys’ rugby 7s, Friends Bwake Boys emerged victorious, beating Laiser 19-17, and in the girls’ category, St Joseph’s Girls overpowered Itigo Girls 26-7.
Kesogon Girls and Cheptil Boys retained their volleyball titles to represent the region in the nationals.
In netball, St Joseph’s Girls’ team secured the top spot.
