Mathare United has confirmed the release of five players within its ranks ahead for the remainder of the season.

Harryson Lutta, Gideon and Jephiter Maraga are among those deemed surplus to requirements at the Slumboys.

The mini-purge also did not spare Elias Kibet and Stephen Okola, who joined the club last season and played key roles in the team’s return to the top flight.

The pair depart after mutually agreeing to the termination of their contracts.

“The club can confirm that it has released five players following the closure of the mid-season transfer window.  The five are Elias Kibet, Gideon Ogweno, Stephen Okola, Harryson Lutta and Jephiter Maraga,” part of the statement read.

The club further revealed that Ogweno will link up with Kibera Black Stars, while Maraga and Lutta will close out the remainder of the 2024/25 season at KSG Ogopa and Soy United, respectively.

The five add to another four who were previously released before the start of the second half of the league.

In a statement on Friday, January 31, 2025, the Slum Boys confirmed the exit of key players including Kevin Kimani who was instrumental to their midfield.

“With the 2024/25 mid-season transfer window officially swinging open on Friday 31st January, the club would like to confirm the departure of four players.

“Kevin Kimani, Chris Koloti, Hakim Msami and Christian Lubulu will not be part of the squad for the remainder of the season. Kimani and Koloti, who were on loan from AFC Leopards, have been allowed to return to their parent club,” the club’s statement read in part.

On its new signings, Slumboys signed midfield lynchpin Brian Rio Ochieng.

Ochieng, a product of the famed Mathare Youth Sports Academy (MYSA) joined the Slumboys side from KCB. The player spent up to seven years with the Bankers.

Peter Oudu was announced as the club’s first midseason acquisition on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. Before John Junior Nyawir joined from the NSL side SamWest Blackboots.

The club also recently signed former Gor Mahia midfielder Musa Masika and youngster Alex Warai.

The additions have been key in turning the tide around with Mathare United experiencing a turn of form.

After a torrid first half, John Kamau’s team seem to be turning a corner and is now unbeaten in three league games.

A victory against leaders Police FC ranked among its impressive results in the month of February.
