Faith Kipyegon has won Kenya a second gold in the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest after winning the 5000m race on Saturday, August 26, 2023.

Kipyegon won the race in 14:53:88, while Sifan Hassan claimed gold, with another Kenyan representative in the race, Beatrice Chebet, winning bronze.

Gudaf Tsegay, the defending champion after emerging as the winner in Oregon in the last edition, failed to claim a podium finish.

Meanwhile, Kipyegon, who was doubling at the global event, had already claimed the first gold for the country when she dominated the 1500m final earlier in the week.

Despite stiff competition from her rival, Hassan of the Netherlands, who is also the London Marathon champion, Kipyegon managed to win the Saturday final in some scintillating fashion after running.

Hassan finished second again, as she failed to beat Kipyegon on the second attempt after she finished second in the 1500m race.

Wanyonyi impresses

Meanwhile, in the 800m race final, teenager Emmanuel Wanyonyi won silver amid stiff competition on Saturday.

The race was won by Marco Arop of Canada in 1:44.24, while Ben Pattison won bronze.

Wanyonyi, who clocked 1:44.53 to win silver, led for quite some time as Arop, Tshepiso Masalela of Botswana, Bryce Hoppel of the USA, and Slimane Moula of Algeria kept closing in on the Kenyan.

Pattison, along the outer lane, was determined, kept increasing his pace, and at one point created some gap between him and his competitors as the race was almost hitting the home stretch.

As Pattison raced in the outer lane, Wanyonyi seized the inner lane for the last 100 meters. However, Arop accelerated and went ahead of the Kenyan teenager, who had shown incredible determination from the time the bell rang.

The achievement means that Wanyonyi has tasted his first global final silver medal at 19, while Arop is the first Canadian to ever win a World Athletics Championship 800m gold in history.
